About the Programme

The Diploma in Medical Law and Ethics provides an interdisciplinary understanding of the legal and ethical principles governing healthcare practice, research and policy.

The programme covers areas such as:

  • Patient rights and informed consent
  • Medical negligence and professional liability
  • Mental health law
  • End-of-life decisions
  • Regulation of medical research
  • Healthcare ethics
  • Emerging technologies in medicine
  • Legal and ethical decision-making

The programme combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications and includes an independent research component.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

  1. Three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination or an equivalent qualification;

OR

  1. Six passes at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination together with at least two years of relevant work experience in law, healthcare or a related field;

OR

  1. A Foundation Course equivalent to SLQF Level 2;

OR

  1. NVQF Level 4 together with five years of relevant work experience or accredited prior learning, followed by a minimum 30-credit programme approved by the Faculty of Law.

Additional Requirements

Applicants should possess proficiency in written and spoken English.

Candidates may be required to participate in an interview or viva voce conducted by the Department of Private and Comparative Law.

Applicants qualifying through SLQF Level 2 or NVQF Level 4 may also be required to sit for an additional admission test.

Programme Details

The programme carries 30 credits and is positioned at SLQF Level 3.

It will be conducted for a period of one year through the hybrid learning mode. The medium of instruction is English.

Course and Application Fees

The course fee for local candidates is Rs. 120,000.

A separate application fee of Rs. 3,500 applies to the current 2026 intake.
