About the Programme
The Diploma in Food Science introduces the basic scientific principles used in the food industry and their practical applications.
It provides essential knowledge and skills related to food composition, food microbiology, food processing, preservation, quality assurance and modern applications in the food industry.
The programme is offered at Level 3 of the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework.

Admission Requirements
Applicants should possess one of the following qualifications:
- Three passes at the GCE Advanced Level examination in the Science stream, including Chemistry
OR
- Three passes at the GCE Advanced Level examination in the Technology stream, including Biosystems Technology
OR
- Relevant Foundation or Advanced Certificate qualifications in Science, including Chemistry, offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka
OR
- An NVQ Level 4 qualification in Food Science, Food Technology or a relevant field, as indicated in the current programme flyer
OR
- GCE Advanced Level studies in the Science stream together with at least three years of relevant experience in the food or food-related industry
OR
- An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka
Final admission eligibility will be determined by the University.

Semester 1
- Chemistry and Biology for Food Science
- Introduction to Food Science and Constituents of Food
- Food Microbiology and Food Spoilage
- Basic Mathematics and Statistics for Food Science
Semester 2
- Laboratory Sessions in Food Science
- Food Preservation and Processing
- Quality Assurance in Food Industry
- Novel Applications in Food Industry
All courses offered under the programme are compulsory.
Credits and Practical Training
The programme consists of 30 credits, representing approximately 1,500 notional learning hours.
Laboratory sessions and the relevant case study component account for approximately 400 practical hours.
Programme Fee
The official OUSL programme page displays a course fee of LKR 106,600.
The current programme flyer lists an application or registration fee of Rs. 500.
