Programme Structure
The BA in Social Sciences is a multidisciplinary degree programme commencing at Level 3.
Each academic year is divided into two semesters. Students can register for courses carrying a maximum of 15 credits during each semester.
A total of 90 credits must be completed to qualify for the degree. The programme includes compulsory courses, elective courses and Continuing Education courses.
Students may select Continuing Education courses carrying up to eight credits per year. Some Continuing Education courses, including English, are compulsory.
Available Study Streams
Students can select one of the following four study streams:
- Economics and Development Studies
- Communication Studies
- Politics and International Relations
- Society and Culture Studies
The programme covers subject areas such as Economics, Sociology, Mass Communication, Politics and International Studies.
Admission Requirements
Applicants should possess one of the following qualifications:
- A minimum of three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination in any stream;
OR
- A Foundation Programme offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka;
OR
- A minimum of 30 credits at SLQF Level 2 or above from a programme approved by the OUSL Senate;
OR
- A qualification or accredited work experience equivalent to NVQF Level 4;
OR
- An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
Programme Duration
The minimum period required to complete the programme is three years.
Students are permitted a maximum period of nine years to complete the degree requirements.
Application Fee
The online application fee is Rs. 500.
The application fee can be paid:
- Online using a debit or credit card with online payment facilities; or
- In cash through the nearest OUSL Regional or Study Centre.
