The Department of English, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, invites applications for admission to its English Diploma Programmes commencing in October 2026.
DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES
- Diploma in Advanced English – Dip (Advanced English)
This programme is suitable for individuals who wish to develop their English language skills to meet professional demands.
- Diploma in English for Teachers of English – Dip (ETE)
This programme is designed for teachers of English language and literature attached to schools and other educational institutions in Sri Lanka.
- Diploma in English Medium Instruction – Dip (EMI)
This programme is suitable for teachers who currently teach, or hope to teach, subjects in the English medium at schools or higher education institutions.
DURATION AND CLASS SCHEDULE
All three Diploma Programmes are conducted over one year and include:
- 240 contact hours
- 40 teaching sessions
- Six hours per teaching session
- Weekend classes only
Diploma in Advanced English:
Applicants may select either Saturday or Sunday classes from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
Diploma in English for Teachers of English and Diploma in English Medium Instruction:
Classes will be conducted on Sundays from 8.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS – DIPLOMA IN ADVANCED ENGLISH
Applicants should possess one of the following qualifications:
- Three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination or an equivalent qualification; or
- Six passes at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination or an equivalent qualification, together with three years of relevant experience; or
- A relevant Certificate Course from a recognized institution accepted by the Department, together with three years of relevant experience.
Applicants must also pass the selection test conducted by the Department.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS – DIP (ETE) AND DIP (EMI)
Applicants should possess one of the following qualifications:
- Three passes at the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination or an equivalent qualification; or
- Six passes at the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination or an equivalent qualification, together with three years of relevant experience; or
- A relevant Certificate Course from a recognized institution accepted by the Department, together with three years of relevant experience.
Applicants must also:
- Provide proof of a current or future assignment as a teacher of English for Dip (ETE), or as a teacher delivering English-medium instruction for Dip (EMI); and
- Pass the selection test conducted by the Department.
FEES
- Course fee: LKR 95,000
- Payment facility: Two instalments
- Application/Selection Test fee: LKR 2,500
- The Application/Selection Test fee is non-refundable.
SELECTION TEST
A selection test will be conducted in September 2026. The date, time and venue will be communicated to applicants via email.
Successful candidates will be enrolled in the relevant Diploma Programme commencing in October 2026.
HOW TO APPLY
Applications must be submitted online only. Printed and emailed applications will not be accepted.
Applicants must pay the Application/Selection Test fee and upload a scanned copy of the original payment receipt when completing the online application form.
The application must be submitted on or before 22 September 2026.
IMPORTANT
Internal students of the University of Colombo are not eligible to apply for these Extension Courses.
