Programme Overview

The Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering, University of Moratuwa, invites applications for the January 2027 intake of the MSc in Electronics and Automation programme.

The programme is designed for practising engineers in electronics, electronic technology and automation industries, as well as bachelor’s degree holders seeking careers in these fields.

Students will gain advanced theoretical knowledge and practical experience in electronic-system design, automation, embedded systems, digital control, signal processing and related engineering areas.

Duration and Study Options

The programme offers flexible study options:

One year of full-time study
Two years of part-time study

The programme begins with postgraduate diploma coursework consisting of taught modules, assignments, projects and presentations.

Students who successfully complete the postgraduate diploma requirements may proceed to the MSc research component, subject to fulfilling the applicable academic requirements.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should possess one of the following qualifications:

Option 1

A Bachelor of the Science of Engineering degree from the University of Moratuwa, specializing in:

Electronic Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Computer Engineering

Option 2

An engineering degree of at least four years of full-time duration or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university in a relevant field.

The qualification must be acceptable to the Faculty of Engineering and approved by the University Senate.

Option 3

A recognized category of membership of a recognized professional institute obtained through an academic route, together with at least one year of recognized relevant experience obtained after receiving the membership.

Applicants under this category must successfully complete the programme’s placement examination.

Option 4

A minimum three-year full-time degree from a recognized university in a relevant field, together with at least one year of relevant experience obtained after graduation.

Applicants under this category must successfully complete the programme’s placement examination.

Progression to the MSc Research Component

To proceed to the MSc research component, students must successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Electronics and Automation with:

A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7
All compulsory credit requirements completed

Students who do not meet the MSc progression requirements may be eligible for the Postgraduate Diploma, subject to fulfilling the applicable credit requirements.

Selection Process

The selection process may include:

Assessment of academic and professional qualifications
Placement examination
Interview
