Sri Lanka Railways has invited applications from suitably qualified male and female Sri Lankan citizens for recruitment to Railway Security Grade III through an open competitive examination.

A total of 256 vacancies are available, consisting of 239 male vacancies and 17 female vacancies.

Educational Qualifications

Applicants should have passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination in not more than two sittings with:

Six subjects
Sinhala, Tamil or English Language
Mathematics
At least two credit passes

All the required qualifications should have been completed by the closing date.

Age Requirement

Applicants should be not less than 18 years and not more than 28 years of age as of 28 September 2026.

Accordingly, applicants should have been born:

On or after 29 September 1997
On or before 28 September 2008

General Requirements

Applicants should:

Be citizens of Sri Lanka
Be unmarried
Possess excellent character
Be physically and mentally fit
Be willing to serve in any part of Sri Lanka

Persons holding a religious clerical position are not permitted to apply for or sit this competitive examination.

Physical Requirements

Male Applicants

Minimum height without footwear: 5 feet 6 inches
Minimum chest measurement: 32 inches

Female Applicants

Minimum height without footwear: 5 feet 2 inches

Applicants should satisfy the required eyesight standard without spectacles and pass the stipulated LB 29 eyesight examination.

Salary Scale

The applicable salary code is RS 1–2025.

The monthly salary scale is:

Rs. 49,550 – 7×540 – 27×670 – Rs. 71,420

Selected applicants will initially be placed on the starting salary point of Rs. 49,550.

Other allowances paid to government officers may also be applicable.

Examination Fee

A non-refundable examination fee of Rs. 1,200 should be paid at any People’s Bank branch to the following account:

The account is maintained at the People’s Bank City Office branch in the name of the General Manager of Railways.

The original payment receipt should be securely affixed to the application. Applicants should retain a photocopy for future reference.

Money orders and stamps will not be accepted.

Selection Process

The selection process consists of:

Physical fitness and suitability assessment
Written competitive examination
Structured interview

Physical Fitness Assessment

The preliminary assessment includes:

1,000-metre run
Chin-ups
Push-ups
Sit-ups
Squat thrusts
Kim’s Game memory assessment

Applicants should obtain at least 50% of the total marks to proceed to the written examination.

A medical recommendation issued by a doctor registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council should be presented when attending the fitness assessment.

The fitness assessment and written examination are expected to be conducted in Colombo.

Written Examination

The written examination will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English media.

Intelligence Test

Duration: 1 hour
Total Marks: 100
Pass Mark: 50

This paper will assess logical reasoning, decision-making ability, numerical problems, mathematical problems, language patterns, tables, flowcharts, pictures and graphs.

Language Ability

Duration: 2 hours
Total Marks: 100
Pass Mark: 50

This paper will assess comprehension, grammar, report writing, essay writing, office correspondence and the ability to express ideas clearly.

Applicants should obtain at least 50 marks separately for each paper.

Structured Interview

Applicants who qualify through the written examination will be called for a structured interview according to merit.

Marks will be considered for:

Additional educational qualifications
Leadership and community services
Sports achievements
Additional language and information-technology knowledge
Performance at the interview

Final recruitment will be based on the combined results of the written examination and structured interview, subject to the number of vacancies.

Service Conditions

The post is permanent.
The appointment is subject to a three-year probation period.
Selected candidates should complete the prescribed efficiency-bar examination.
Required official-language proficiency should be completed within the stipulated period.
Appointees may be required to serve in any part of Sri Lanka.

The application should be completed in the language medium in which the applicant intends to sit the examination.

The applicant’s signature on the application and admission card should be certified by an authorized person.
